Overview:
Shepherd of the Mountains is a non-denominational church in Murphy, North Carolina that is seeking to invite people into God’s Kingdom and to nurture their faith. “Family” is important at Shepherd Church and so we do everything we can to celebrate & support families and are trying to weave a sense of family into everything that we do. We are seeking a Youth and Family Pastor who will help lead the process of developing holistic ministries to families!
Qualifications:
- Preferably a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, but commensurate internship/mentoring track and real life experience also acceptable.
- A strong passion for nurturing the faith of Youth/teens.
- A vibrant personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Able to lead Youth/Teens in worship (musical giftedness a plus)
Big Picture Job Responsibilities:
- Foster a culture of “Faith in the Home.” Equip parents to be the primary developers of their children’s faith.
- Foster a culture of “relevant faith” Model strong, relational Christian leadership to youth and families of the church, affirming a discipleship culture.
- Foster a culture of connectedness. Help every child family member have a sense of authentic belonging and purpose within the larger church family.
- Foster a culture of outreach. Help every member, young and old, embrace their calling to love their neighbor and to join Jesus Christ in his redemptive mission.
- Develop an assimilation process 5th graders moving into the youth ministry, working closely with the Children’s ministry director.
Specific Responsibilities
- Coordinate & Supervise Youth Ministry programs (5th through 12th grade).
- Plan & coordinate Youth Ministry Events
- Recruit, equip, empower, and encourage volunteers
- Equip & encourage parents to take an active role in the spiritual development of their own children.
- Choose & implement curriculum based on staffing and needs of students
- Manage the Youth & Family Ministry budget in cooperation with Faith and Family Deacon.
- Participate in staff meetings and staff devotional times. Be a great teammate – working together with other staff to help the church thrive in all areas.
- Engage with families outside of Ministry settings and regularly scheduled events.
- Be an active part of the larger life of the church.
- Partner with the SR. Pastor, “Faith and Family” Deacon, and all staff to accomplish this mission/ministry.
- Plan and oversee Youth discipleship hour on Sunday Mornings.
- Recognize and engage new/guest families with youth age kids. Our goal is to make them feel at home from the moment they arrive at Shepherd Church.
- Be willing to grow as a Preacher in the Senior Pastor’s absence.
- Engage in continuing education opportunities.
- Maintain records and training in regard to “Protect my Ministry” policy
- Connect with local schools and community organizations. Attend various sporting, FCA, and other relevant events.
- Regularly communicate with parents, giving them updates on lessons, events, and spiritual journey of their student.
- Teach the Word of God in an accurate, compelling, and age-specific manner.
- Plan, coordinate Wednesday evening Youth Gatherings weekly
- Plan a yearly youth ministry calendar to be created six months in advance. Promoting these events through various church communications, including youth specific social media.
- Appreciate the importance of accountability in life and ministry.
Other Possible Responsibilities
We expect all our staff to contribute in ways that go beyond their immediate job. There are ministry moments that simply require “all hands on deck.” Additionally, we strive to help our staff find ways of serving that match their own passions and interests. Those responsibilities will be determined in conversation based on the interests and skill sets of the person we hire.
Some of the possible additional areas of responsibility might include:
- Community outreach / local missions
- Church wide communications
- Video production & other media development
- other administrative functions
- Volunteering in the community.
Our Staff Culture
We work hard to have a flexible and supportive staff structure. All of our pastoral staff get the chance to share in worship, including preaching from time to time.
